No major upsets this morning with all the favoured sides getting thru to the next round
A huge second round where we saw one of the favourites for the event Pat and Gary Caffell eliminated by the Manning duo Frank Carbone/Blake Nairn. A great game by all with the Standard really right up there.
It as a hard pill to swallow for the Caffell Brothers who lost last year by the same score and margin and in the last eight. However we must say well done to Frank Carbone and Blake Nairn who won their next game and will play in the semi-final tomorrow morning
The little known Kwinana duo caused perhaps the biggest boilover of the Championship when they defeated the Strong Vic Park combination of Ryan Khan. Jeff Mitchell to make it to the semi-final and will front up to Brown/Back tomorrow morning
He is back, yes Steve Back has gone as far as he has ever been in a major event and must say how happy we are for him and great to see him right up there with a big chance to win a major title.
He played with Dan Brown and faced their moment of truth when they met Dave Rankin/ Barry White winning 15-13 to make it thru to the semi final
Country Stars Warren Holt and Steve Trowl had a tough draw to face with the Cambridge duo Luke Richardson/Harold Christensen,. the score shows a good win and now a semi final berth.
Congratulations to Frank Carbone and Blake Nairn for their win in the Champion of Club Champion Pairs Championship. They defeated the Kwinana pair of Brett Clayton and Steve Spinks 25 – 6.
It was a pretty tough draw for Carbone/Nairn, winning the most important game against possible tournament favourites Gary and Pat Caffell 16-15, this win came after being 3-14 down, followed by another close encounter defeating the Belmont pair of L. Trewern/ A. Britton then surviving a gigantic game against the Wagin pair Warren Holt/Steve Trowl 12-10. Frank Carbone was quick to say how well his opponents had played, especially Warren Holt in the first semi.
In the other semi, the morning game was played out to the last end with Clayton/ Spinks getting across the line against the Kardinya pair of Daniel Brown/Steve Black in a nail biter winning 15-14, an upset win without doubt, but no more than their defeat of Ryan Khan/ Jeff Mitchell, also a 15-14 win.
This duo are virtual unknowns, so much so I was unable to refer to them in my preview, they simply didn’t register on the Richter scale, They can feel well satisfied with their performance even tho the 25-6 scoreline is huge. Steve Spinks is a second year player and to have gone to the brink for player with such little experience would suggest there is much more to come while Brett Clayton is an experienced player, taking all things into account it hard to believe they are playing 3rd division .
The final was an anti-climax when there were many games that were won and lost on the last end. No doubt a feather in the cap of both Frank Carbone and Blake Nairn to have won this event. Frank has been a runner up in the State Triples while this is the biggest win for young Blake Nairn. Well done to you both and lets hope you can play in the last National Champ of Club of Champ Pairs later in the year
